• supports 64 bit file sizes and offsets

  • allows files > 2 GB

• no more artificial limits on lengths of path and file names

• new operation for access check on the server

• character & block special files, mknod operation

  • for device files
  • allows diskless clients

• no more limit of read & write request size

  • limit is specified by server
