- Constraints on hardware standardization have been removed
- Workgroups and experiments can use their own hardware and different suppliers
- Workgroups can have “full” control on the configuration of the PCs they manage
- they can “freeze” the environment, avoiding unwanted automatic upgrades from the central team
- they can select/modify the standard application configuration
- they can have their own “workgroup” applications and still benefit from the central service
- It is the workgroup that pays the cost of the differentiation
