In order to move from FC to the Gigabit Ethernet only the PHYSICAL LAYER shall be replaced!

The communication protocols are organised in protocol layers. The DDL protocol has 4 layers:

• DDL interface layer (most upper layer);
• signalling & framing layer;
• coding layer;
• physical layer.

For the Gigabit Ethernet implementation of the DDL only the physical layer shall be replaced.
