I will demonstrate these ideas with a “real” application the Atlas detector.

There is only time to show some trivial, but which you may find interesting, examples.

What does a user “see”? A quite conventional window, in both Windows and unix/Motif, with the three elements shown. The user has control over each of these elements, but the comfort of the system providing as well useful elements and defaults.

Not shown is a separate window that receives printed output. (Actually the console window.)
