CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) invites participation in the
International Conference on
COMPUTING IN HIGH ENERGY PHYSICS
April 7-11, 1997, Rathaus Schoeneberg, Berlin, Germany
With the best wishes
The CHEP'97 Local Organizing Committee
IMPORTANT: NOTE that reduced conference fee can only be granted if payment is being made before February 1st! In any other case we are forced to demand the full conference fee of 620 DM.
Please visit our Web site at http://www.desy.de/chep97 and look in the "News" section for more information on the tourist program. The trips T1 (Berlin City Tour), T5 (Trip to Potsdam) and T6 (Trip to Dresden) take place in a conference free time and can be booked by everybody, while the other tours are intended for accompanying persons.
IMPORTANT: NOTE that all the tours require a minimum number of participants which must have registered before February 15. The early registration is necessary since there is no chance to get entrance tickets to the very popular museums etc on short notice. Registration forms for the tourist program can be found on the Web at the location mentioned above.
CHEP'97 runs from Monday, April 7, to Friday, April 11, 1997. On the Sunday preceding the conference, the Conference Secretariat will already be available for registration, and a welcome party will be held in the evening. A preliminary conference schedule is shown at http://www.desy.de/chep97.
Computing in HEP is currently undergoing radical changes, as the growing complexity of computing systems and the increasing speed of technological innovation force the community to introduce, exploit, and rely more and more upon technologies which are developed and maintained outside its field. Our aim is to take CHEP'97 as an opportunity to the assess spread, longevity, and cultural impact of different technologies, and to identify similarities and differences between HEP and non-HEP applications, environments, and experience.
The plenary program is structured such that each day covers a different topic. Each topic is addressed by both experts from the fields and from the HEP community. For the latter, a variety of panels is included to the program to achieve a broader coverage of topics, and to offer more than one point of view. The topics and days are
Monday Networking and Internet Computing Tuesday Computing Models of HEP Experiments and Computing Infrastructure at HEP Institutes Wednesday Object Technology and Software Processes Thursday Processors, Architecture, and Operating Systems Friday Technology Management in the HEP Community and Conference Summaries
We have received more than 280 abstract submissions to CHEP'97, which have been reviewed by session convenors. We accommodated all the talks which were recommended by the convenors in the parallel program as either long (30') or short (20') talks. The abstracts of the papers which will be presented at the conference are now available on the Web, the session details will follow soon.
The poster session features demonstrations and technical details of a large variety of HEP computing projects. Posters will be presented on late Tuesday afternoon. The event starts with a short plenary session to introduce the posters and their authors, followed by open-ended poster presentation accompanied by cheese & wine. Check the abstracts and session details to find out more about the poster session.
Products of major computer vendors, network suppliers, and software companies will be presented during the conference. An exhibition will be held during the whole week of the conference, and the late Monday afternoon is allocated for vendor presentations. Vendors are each given 15' slots to present and discuss the products and topics of their choice.
After the conference a HEPiX workshop is scheduled in Zeuthen from April 14
to April 16 (which is easily reachable, 30-60 minutes by public transport,
from the center of Berlin). For further information on HEPIX see
http://www.ifh.de/hepix/
or contact alan.silverman@cern.ch or wolfgang.friebel@ifh.de.
During the conference we will provide rooms in the evening for anyone who wishes to organize BOF's or any other meeting.
