Tools for Operation Support of a Large Heterogeneous Computing
Environment

The Operations Group of DESY's computer center has startet an activity to
create and provide intelligent support for and partial automation of
computer
center operations. The purpose is to develop a framework which can
integrate
the various services the computer center offers into the central
operations
and help desk.

A fundamental part of the system is the equipment and configuration
database.
It is based on an ODBMS and provides a central repository for any
information
related to the computer center, eg
o device information and status,
o process information and status for processes required by
central services,
o configurations, or
o physical or logical interconnections.
An electronic logbook is developed as a medium to track, access, and
retrieve
information related to computer center operation. It stores notes,
problems,
and solutions, allows to link problems to solutions, can review problem
status
(eg open, solved, being worked on), or look for similar problems or
solutions.
Logbook access is through the Web.

The system is developed following a defined, object-oriented, use-case
driven
software development process. The poster will discuss the system
architecture
and functionality and highlight the development process. Initial
implementations
will be demonstrated if possible.
