Abstract

The energy loss of electrons in matter is characterized by a
distribution which is strongly non-Gaussian. The Kalman filter is
therefore not the optimal track fitting procedure. We show that the
estimation of momentum can be improved by using non-linear methods
like the Gaussian-sum filter and the Metropolis--Hastings algorithm.
We report results of a simple simulation experiment and comment on
the respective merits of these methods.
